Learn what a certificate of celibacy is, why you need it for marriage in Turkey, and the essential steps to obtain an apostille for your official documents.
What is a Certificate of Celibacy?
A Certificate of Celibacy is a legal paper that proves you're single. Some people call it a Single Status Certificate or a Certificate of No Impediment. It shows you're legally free to marry. This document lists your full name, birth date, and father's name. It also shows your marital status from your home country's official records.

Local population offices or marriage registries issue this paper. It proves you don't have an active marriage elsewhere. So, it shows there are no legal blocks to your new marriage contract.
Why You Need a Certificate of Celibacy
You'll need a Certificate of Celibacy for most legal tasks abroad. If you want to marry someone in another country, their local office needs proof you can marry. You can't register a marriage in a foreign country without it.
But it isn't just for weddings. You might need it to register a child's birth or apply for certain visas. It helps the state keep your family records accurate.
The Importance of the Apostille Stamp
A certificate from your home country won't work everywhere right away. You must legalize it first to make it valid abroad. If the country is in the Hague Convention, you'll need an Apostille stamp.

This stamp comes from a high office, like the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It proves the signature and seal on your paper are real. Once you have it, other member countries will accept your document as legal.
How to Buy or Get the Certificate
You can get this document in a few ways:
- In Person: Go to your local registry office at home.
- Consular Services: If you live abroad, use your country's embassy.
- Authorized Representative: You can give a lawyer power of attorney to get it for you.
You'll fill out a form and pay a small fee. Get the Apostille stamp right after you receive the paper if you plan to use it abroad.
Required Documents for Application
Every country is different, but you'll usually need these items:
- A valid ID or passport.
- Proof of where you live.
- A finished application form.
- A receipt for the fee.
If a lawyer helps you, they must show the original power of attorney and their own ID.
Validity Period
Don't forget that a Certificate of Celibacy expires quickly. Most offices only accept papers from the last 3 to 6 months. Since your status can change, they want fresh proof. So, check the rules of the country where you'll use it. You want to make sure it's still valid when you turn it in.
