Learn the step-by-step process for obtaining a visa invitation letter for Turkey, including notary requirements and essential documents for your application.
What is a Turkish Visa Invitation Letter?
A Turkish visa invitation letter is a formal document. A person living in Turkey sends it to a foreigner who wants to visit. This letter tells the Turkish consulate that the visitor has a place to stay and a person responsible for them. It is often called a 'Letter of Undertaking' or 'Taahhütname' in Turkish. While this letter does not guarantee you will get a visa, it makes your application much stronger.
Who Can Send an Invitation Letter?
Two types of people or entities can issue an invitation letter in Turkey:
- Turkish Citizens: Any citizen with a valid ID can go to a notary to invite a guest.
- Foreign Residents: Foreigners living in Turkey with a valid residence permit can also invite guests.
- Turkish Companies: If the visit is for business, a registered company must issue the letter using their official tax plate (Vergi Levhası).
How to Get a Letter of Invitation to Turkey
The process is straightforward but must follow legal steps. Follow these instructions to get the document correctly:
Step 1: Visit a Notary Public
The person living in Turkey (the inviter) must go to any Notary Public (Noter). You cannot simply write this letter at home on a piece of paper. It must be a formal legal document stamped by the notary.
Step 2: Provide Invitee Information
The inviter needs the following details from the person coming to Turkey:
- Full name as it appears on the passport.
- Passport number and expiration date.
- Date of birth and nationality.
- The specific reason for the visit (tourism, family visit, or business).
- The planned dates of the stay.
Step 3: Sign the Undertaking
The inviter signs a document stating they will provide food and housing. They also promise that the visitor will leave Turkey before their visa expires. If the inviter is a company, they must provide their tax plate and authorized signature circle.
Step 4: Send the Original Document
Once the notary stamps the letter, the inviter must send the original physical copy to the applicant. Turkish consulates usually require the original document with the wet seal, not a digital scan or photocopy.
Required Details in the Invitation Letter
To rank well and avoid rejection, the letter must include specific information:
- Inviter's ID: Republic of Turkey Identity Number or Residence Permit Number.
- Contact Info: Full home address and a working phone number.
- Relationship: A clear statement of how the inviter knows the applicant (friend, relative, or business partner).
- Financial Guarantee: A statement confirming the inviter will cover living expenses if the visitor cannot.
Does an Invitation Letter Guarantee a Visa?
No, an invitation letter is only a supporting document. The Turkish Consulate will still check the applicant's background. They look at financial status, criminal records, and ties to their home country. However, having a notarized invitation letter significantly reduces the risk of rejection for those visiting friends or family.
Business vs. Personal Invitations
If you are traveling for business, the letter is different. A company must issue it. The letter should be on the company's letterhead. It must include the company's tax registration details. For personal visits, a simple notarized letter from an individual is enough.
