Discover the essential health insurance requirements for obtaining a Turkish residence permit and learn how to choose between private or general coverage options.

Mandatory Health Insurance for Turkish Residence Permits

You need valid health insurance for residence permit applications in Turkey. The Directorate General of Migration Management makes this a strict legal rule. If you don't have a policy, the office will reject your application. Your insurance must cover your whole stay. So, if you want a two-year permit, buy a two-year policy.

Types of Health Insurance for Foreigners

Most foreigners pick between two types of coverage. You can choose private health insurance or the state-run General Health Insurance (GSS). Each has its own rules and benefits. Your choice often depends on how long you've lived here.

Private Health Insurance (Yabancı Sağlık Sigortası)

This is the top choice for new arrivals. It's cheap and meets all the legal needs for your residency application. These policies work at private hospitals that have a contract with the insurer. They usually cover surgeries and doctor visits within set limits.

General Health Insurance (GSS)

The GSS is Turkey’s public health system. You can apply for this after living in Turkey for one full year. You'll pay a monthly fee to the Social Security Institution (SGK). It gives you access to state hospitals and some private ones for a low cost. It also covers old health issues after a short wait.

Minimum Health Insurance for Residence Permit Requirements

Your private policy must meet specific standards to be valid. The government sets these rules to ensure you're protected. If your policy is too basic, the migration office won't accept it.

  • Inpatient Treatment: This covers surgeries and hospital stays. Most plans pay 100% at contracted spots.
  • Outpatient Treatment: This is for check-ups and tests. It often has a yearly cap, like 5,000 TL or 10,000 TL.
  • Network: The policy must work at hospitals across the whole country.

Age Requirements and Exemptions

Your age changes what you need to buy. Some people don't need a policy at all, while others must have one.

  • Under 18: Kids don't strictly need their own policy if parents are covered. But it's still a good idea to get it for extra safety.
  • Ages 18 to 65: You must have insurance. There are no exceptions for this group during the application.
  • Over 65: You're off the hook. People over 65 don't need mandatory insurance for their permit. But healthcare is pricey, so many still buy it voluntarily.

How to Apply for Turkish Health Insurance

Getting a private policy is fast and easy. You just need your passport and a Turkish tax number. Most companies send the papers digitally so you can print them for your meeting. For GSS, you'll need to visit an SGK office in person. Bring your permit, passport, and proof you don't have insurance back home.

Using Your Insurance at Hospitals

Bring your insurance card and residency ID to the hospital. Always check if the hospital is "contracted" first. If it is, the insurer pays them directly. You might only pay a small fee. If you go to a non-contracted hospital, you'll pay the full bill yourself. Then, you'll have to ask the insurance company to pay you back later.

Renewing Your Insurance

Don't let your policy expire. If it ends, your residency might become invalid. It's smart to start the renewal about 30 days early. Keeping your health insurance for residence permit active ensures you stay legal in Turkey. It's a small step that prevents big legal headaches later.
