Turkey Implements Mandatory PCR Testing for International Arrivals
The Turkish Ministry of Health has introduced new travel regulations to manage international entry during the COVID-19 pandemic. All passengers traveling to Turkey from abroad must now provide a negative PCR test result. This measure ensures the safety of both residents and visitors by minimizing the risk of virus transmission across borders.
Key Dates and Entry Requirements
The new testing requirements follow a specific timeline based on the mode of transport. Air passengers entering Turkey starting December 28, 2020, must present their test results before boarding. For those arriving by land or sea, the requirement takes effect on December 30, 2020. These regulations are currently scheduled to remain in place until March 1, 2021.
The PCR test must be conducted within 72 hours before the passenger's scheduled departure. Travelers are responsible for obtaining their test results from certified laboratories in their country of origin. Documentation must be presented in a format that border authorities or airline staff can easily verify.
Quarantine Protocols for Travelers Without Test Results
Airlines have been instructed to deny boarding to any passenger who cannot produce a negative PCR test result. However, for those entering through land or sea borders without a test, specific quarantine protocols apply. These individuals must isolate at their declared place of residence for seven days.
On the seventh day of quarantine, the individual may undergo a new test. If the result is negative, the isolation period ends. If the result is positive, the individual will receive medical treatment in accordance with the Ministry of Health's COVID-19 protocols. This system ensures that untested arrivals do not pose a public health risk.
Special Measures for High-Risk Countries
The Ministry of Health has identified specific regions that require additional precautions due to the prevalence of new virus variants. Travelers who have visited the United Kingdom, Denmark, or South Africa within the ten days prior to their arrival in Turkey face stricter rules. These passengers must provide a negative PCR test and undergo a mandatory quarantine at their residence, even if their initial test result is negative.
Airlines and Border Authority Compliance
Turkish Airlines and other international carriers are strictly enforcing these rules. General Manager Bilal Ekşi confirmed that passengers must show their negative PCR documents before they are allowed to fly. Border authorities at land gates and seaports are also conducting thorough checks. Travelers should keep a digital or physical copy of their test results throughout their journey to avoid delays or entry denials.
