2020-2021 Residence Permits of Students Who Frost Their Registration
International students in Turkey who have frozen their registration face specific residence permit rules. Learn how to maintain your legal status during your studies.
Many international students faced big problems with their residence permit in Turkey during the 2020-2021 spring semester. New applications reached our Board from many different universities. The global pandemic caused many people to lose their legal status. This created a lot of stress for students in our higher education system. So, the General Directorate of Migration Management worked with the Ministry of Interior to fix these issues.
They wanted to stop students from losing their rights. Under the new rules, students who froze their registration won't have their records deleted. This allows them to keep their legal status while they wait to start classes again. We want to make sure you stay legal while you study.
New Rules for Your Residence Permit in Turkey
If you froze your registration but your permit expired, don't worry. You can get a permit that lasts until the end of September 2021. This applies to anyone who applied for an extension during this time.
What if you didn't freeze your studies? If you are still studying or graduating in the 2020-2021 period, you're also safe. The ministry will extend your permit until the end of September 2021. This gives you enough time to finish your degree or plan your next steps.
Universities and local migration offices are now working together. They'll collect your documents and make sure the process is smooth. And they'll keep the rectors informed so no one faces a disruption. If your situation is different, the usual rules still apply. But these changes help most students keep their residence permit in Turkey during these tough times.
