The YÖS exam is a mandatory requirement for international students aiming to pursue a bachelor's degree in Turkey. Learn about eligibility and application steps.
Understanding the YÖS Exam in Turkey
The YÖS Exam is your ticket to a degree in Turkey. It's the main test for international students who want to study here. You can use it for both bachelor's and associate's programs. In the past, every school had its own test. Now, things are simpler. Most schools use a single test called TR-YÖS.
The Shift to TR-YÖS
Turkey changed the system back to a central model in 2023. This makes your life much easier. You don't have to travel to ten different cities for ten different tests. One good score can get you into many Turkish universities. But keep in mind that some private schools still do their own thing. They might look at your high school grades instead.
Who Can Take the YÖS Exam?
Not everyone can sign up for this test. You need to meet specific rules to apply. You're eligible if you fit into these groups:
- Foreigners who weren't born as Turkish citizens.
- People with a Blue Card.
- Dual citizens who got Turkish nationality later in life.
- Turkish citizens who finished all of high school in another country.
- TRNC citizens living there who have GCE AL results.
Exam Content and Structure
The test doesn't ask about history or geography. It looks at how you think. You'll usually face 80 questions in two main parts. And you don't need to be a genius to understand the layout.
1. IQ and Logic
This part has about 40 to 45 questions. It tests your logic and how you solve puzzles. You don't need to speak perfect Turkish to pass this section. It's all about pattern recognition and abstract thinking.
2. Mathematics and Geometry
You'll see about 35 to 40 questions here. It covers algebra, trigonometry, and basic shapes. The level is similar to what you learn in 10th or 11th grade. Most international students find this part very familiar.
Where is the Exam Held?
You can take the TR-YÖS in many places. It's held in big cities like Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir. But you don't always have to travel to Turkey. There are test centers in Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Azerbaijan too. Check the ÖSYM website for the latest list of cities.
Application Process and Required Documents
Don't wait until the last minute to apply. You'll need to use the ÖSYM online portal. Make sure you have your passport and a recent photo ready. You also need your high school diploma. If you haven't graduated yet, get an official letter from your school. And don't forget to pay the fee on time.
Validity and Scoring
Your score stays valid for two years. This gives you time to plan your move. If you want to study Medicine or Law, you'll need a very high score. Top public schools often look for results above 90%. So, start studying early to get the best spot. The YÖS Exam is the first step toward your future career in Turkey.
