Discover the essential steps for obtaining a student residence permit in Turkey and learn how to transition to a tourist permit after your graduation with SimplyTR.

Understanding the student residence permit in Turkey

A student residence permit lets you live here legally while you study. Law No. 6458 sets the rules for this permit under Articles 38 and 41. Most student visas last for 90 days. So, you must apply for your permit before that time runs out. If you wait too long, you might face fines or even deportation.

Who Can Get a student residence permit in Turkey?

Many international students can get this permit. It depends on your age and what you're studying. You can get a permit if you're in an associate, bachelor's, or master's program. It also covers PhD students and medical specialists (TUS or DUS).

Higher Education Students

Usually, the ministry gives you a permit for your whole program. If your study lasts four years, your permit can last four years too. This makes things much easier for you. You won't have to visit the migration office every single year. Just make sure you stay enrolled in your classes.

Primary and Secondary Education Students

What about younger students? If you don't have a family permit, you'll need a student one for primary or high school. This also applies if you're over 18 but still in secondary school. For these levels, you'll get a permit for one year. You must renew it every year until you finish your school.

Required Documents for Your Application

You need a full file to avoid delays. Most rejections happen because of missing papers. You'll need your application form from the online system and your passport. Don't forget a copy of your last entry stamp. You also need a student certificate from your school. Get four biometric photos with a white background. You must show you have enough money to live on. Finally, you need health insurance and proof of your address, like a rental contract.

If you're under 18, you'll need extra papers. These include a letter of consent from your parents and a letter of undertaking from a legal representative in Turkey.

The Application Process Step-by-Step

The process starts on the "e-Ikamet" website. Follow these steps to get your permit:

  1. Online Application: Fill out the form on the official migration website.
  2. Book an Appointment: Pick a time to visit the local migration office.
  3. Fee Payment: Pay the card fee and tax at a bank or tax office.
  4. Interview: Go to your appointment with all your physical papers.

What to Do After Graduation: The 10-Day Rule

Graduation changes things fast. Your permit stops being valid the day you graduate. It doesn't matter what date is on your card. You have just 10 days to apply for a new permit. Many students switch to a short-term permit to look for work. But if you miss this 10-day window, you're staying illegally. This can lead to big fines or a ban from Turkey.

Working Rights for International Students

Can you work while studying? Yes, but there are rules. If you're in a bachelor's program, you must finish your first year first. Master's and PhD students can start working right away. But you can't just start a job. You must get a separate work permit from the Ministry of Labor first. Getting your student residence permit in Turkey is the first step to your future here.
