Learn the essential documents and eligibility criteria for obtaining a family residence permit in Turkey. Follow our step-by-step guide to ensure your application.

Understanding the family residence permit in Turkey

The family residence permit in Turkey helps families stay together while living here. It follows Law No. 6458, specifically Articles 34 to 37. This permit ensures spouses and children don't have to live apart. It's a great way to keep your family unit strong in a new country.

Who Can Be a Sponsor for a Residence Permit?

A sponsor is the person who backs the application for their foreign relatives. To do this, you must fit into one of these groups:

  • Turkish citizens.
  • Foreigners with a valid residence permit.
  • People holding a work permit.
  • Refugees or those with special protection status.
  • Blue Card holders (former Turkish citizens).

Who Can Apply for a Family Residence Permit in Turkey?

Not everyone can get this specific permit. Only certain family members qualify:

  • The sponsor's foreign spouse.
  • Minor foreign children of the sponsor or spouse.
  • Dependent foreign children, even if they're over 18.

If a sponsor has more than one spouse, only one can get the permit. But all the sponsor's children can apply, no matter who their mother is. This rule applies even if the sponsor comes from a country where polygamy is legal.

Mandatory Requirements for the Sponsor

The government wants to know you can support your family. You'll need to show a few things:

  • Money: Your monthly income must be at least the total minimum wage. You also need an extra third of the minimum wage for each family member.
  • A Place to Live: Your home must meet basic health and safety rules.
  • Insurance: You need valid health insurance for everyone.
  • Clean Record: You must show you haven't committed crimes against the family in the last five years.
  • Address: You must be in the Turkish address system (MERNIS).

Documents Required for the Application

You'll need paperwork from both the applicant and the sponsor. Make sure to translate and notarize foreign documents. Many will also need an Apostille to be valid.

Documents from the Applicant (Foreign Family Member)

  • Application Form: Signed by you or a legal rep.
  • Passport: Bring the original and a copy.
  • Photos: Four biometric photos with a white background.
  • Marriage Certificate: For spouses. It needs an Apostille or consulate approval.
  • Birth Certificate: This is for the children.

Documents from the Sponsor

  • ID: Your Turkish ID, residence permit, or work permit.
  • Income Proof: Use bank statements or salary slips.
  • Health Insurance: Proof of SGK or private insurance.
  • Criminal Record: Get this from a courthouse or the e-Devlet portal.
  • Address Proof: A document showing where you live.

How to Get a Family Residence Permit in Turkey: Step-by-Step

Getting your permit involves a few clear steps. Don't skip any, or you might face a rejection.

1. Online Application

Go to the e-ikamet site to start. Pick "First Application" and fill in your details. The system gives you an appointment date and time at the local migration office.

2. Pay Fees

You'll need to pay for the card and the tuition fee. You can do this at a tax office or online. Keep your receipts safe.

3. The Meeting

Go to the Migration Office on your date. Bring all your original papers and copies. Sometimes, they'll ask questions to make sure the marriage is real.

4. Wait for Approval

It takes up to 90 days to hear back. If they say yes, your card comes by mail via PTT. It will arrive at your registered address in Turkey.

Duration of the Family Residence Permit

Most of the time, this permit lasts for three years. But it can't last longer than the sponsor's own permit. If the sponsor is a Turkish citizen, you usually get the full three years.

Important Considerations: Sham Marriages

Be careful about "fake" marriages. Turkish officials check these very closely. They might visit your home or interview you separately. If they think the marriage isn't real, they'll cancel the family residence permit in Turkey. You could even be deported or banned from the country. It's always best to follow the rules and keep your records honest.
