A long-term residence permit lets you live in Turkey forever. It's based on Articles 42 to 45 of Law No. 6458. You don't need to renew this status every few years like a short-term permit. Who Can Apply for a Long-Term Residence Permit?

You can apply if you've lived in Turkey for eight years without a break. The ministry must check and approve your file first. Once they say yes, your permit stays valid for your whole life. But you must follow certain rules to keep it active. It's a great option for people who want permanent residency.

Ineligible Groups

Not every type of stay leads to this status. Some groups can't switch to a long-term permit even if they stay for many years. These include:

• Refugees and conditional refugees.
• People with subsidiary protection status.
• Humanitarian residence permit holders.
• Those under temporary protection.

The 8-Year Uninterrupted Residency Rule

The eight-year rule is the most important part of the process. But the law counts your time in a specific way. For example, student permits only count for half their duration. If you stayed two years as a student, it counts as one year toward your goal. Most other permits count for the full time you spent in the country. You shouldn't leave Turkey for too long, or you might break the legal continuity of your stay.

Mandatory Conditions for Application

You need to meet five main goals to get an indefinite stay. First, you must show eight years of legal living. Second, you can't have taken social aid from the state in the last three years. You also need a steady income to support yourself and your family. Don't forget to keep a valid health insurance policy. Finally, you must not be a threat to public order or safety.

Rights and Privileges of Long-Term Residents

You'll have almost the same rights as Turkish citizens. You won't need a separate work permit to get a job or start a business. But there are a few things you still can't do. You can't join the military or vote in local or national elections. You also can't work in government jobs. And you'll still pay taxes when you bring a car from abroad. Outside of these rules, you're treated like a local under social security laws.

Reasons for Cancellation of the Permit

The government can take your permit away for two main reasons. One is if you become a serious threat to public safety. The other is if you stay outside Turkey for more than one year in a row. But you can stay away longer for health or school reasons. Just make sure you have the right documents to prove it. If you follow these rules, your stay remains secure.

Re-Application After Cancellation

Did you lose your permit because you stayed abroad too long? You can apply again at a Turkish consulate or a local office. The best part is you don't need to wait another eight years. The ministry gives these cases priority and often finishes them in a month. So, getting your long-term residence permit back is much faster the second time around.
