Foreign Referees Can Now Manage Matches in Turkey

The Turkish Football Federation has introduced significant reforms, including the potential for foreign referees to manage matches in the Super League.

The New Era of Turkish Refereeing: Foreign Exchange and Modernization

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) just announced big changes for Turkish refereeing. They want to make the Super League as good as Europe's top leagues. By using new tests and working with other countries, the TFF hopes to make things clearer. This should help stop the arguments we often see about referee calls.

Foreign Referee Exchange Program

One big change is a new deal with major European leagues. Turkish referees from the UEFA Elite list will now work games in Europe. In return, top European officials will come to Turkey for big matches. This helps local refs learn from different styles. And it brings world-class experience to the Turkish Super League.

Separation of Field and VAR Referee Staff

Officials are now splitting field referees from Video Assistant Referees (VAR). VAR staff must now have special IFAB certificates. If Turkey doesn't have enough certified people, the TFF will hire them from other countries. This lets VAR experts focus only on the screens. They won't have to worry about the physical stress of running on the pitch.

The Dual Observer Monitoring System

A new two-person system will now grade how referees perform. One observer stays at the stadium. The second one works from a special room in Riva. This second person watches on TV and can't talk to anyone else. Both people give a score. But if the scores are very different, the head of the board reviews the match himself.

Scientific Training and Psychotechnical Testing

Referee training is getting more scientific now. The TFF is working with Istanbul University to run new tests. These assessments check things like:

  • Selective attention and how well they understand the game.
  • How they judge speed and distance.
  • Side vision and body coordination.
  • How they make choices under pressure.

Support staff will also include psychologists. Two experts will live at the Riva center to help referees talk better with players. So, they'll be better prepared for high-pressure moments on the grass.

New Technology for Referee Appointments

High-tech software is replacing the old system for picking match officials. This new tool is like the ones used in Spain and Belgium. It uses smart math to pick referees based on their past scores and match needs. This helps stop people from picking their favorites or showing bias.

Leadership Overhaul: The New Central Referee Board (MHK)

Leaders have also changed the structure of the Central Referee Board (MHK). Sabri Çelik is back as the Chairman for his fourth time. He's joined by experts like Murat Ilgaz and Ahmet İbanoğlu. This team will lead nine big reforms for the 2022-23 season. It's a fresh start for Turkish refereeing.

A Historic Milestone for Women in Football

For the first time, a woman has joined the MHK. Aynur Aysun Akar is a former FIFA referee and a graduate of Gaziantep University. She used to lead the local board in her home city. Her new role shows that the TFF wants more women in top leadership spots in football.
