Understanding Passport Validity Extensions

For a short time, passports that expired after January 1, 2021, stayed valid until July 1, 2021. This applied to diplomatic, service, and ordinary passports. Using a Travel Document Instead of an Expired Passport

Do you need to go home but your document is no longer valid? You can't fly or cross borders with an expired passport now that the extensions have ended. Instead, you'll need a "Travel Document" or Return Certificate. The Azerbaijani Consulate issues this paper so you can make a one-way trip back home.

How to Apply for a Travel Document

You must visit the Embassy in Ankara or the Consulates in Istanbul or Kars to get this paper. Go in person to submit your request. It usually doesn't take long to process. But it's smart to contact them at least a week before you plan to leave. Remember, this document only lets you enter Azerbaijan. You can't use it to visit other countries.

Required Documents for the Application

To get your Return Certificate, you'll need a few items. Bring your old passport and your national ID card (Şəxsiyyət vəsiqəsi) if you have it. You also need two biometric photos and a finished application form. The consulate provides the form. Finally, show them your flight ticket or travel plan.

Travel Regulations Between Turkey and Azerbaijan

Turkey and Azerbaijan have a special bond. You can often travel between them using just a biometric ID card. But this only works if your ID is valid and has a chip. If you rely on your passport and it's out of date, follow the consulate's rules. Otherwise, the airline might block you from boarding your flight.
