Learn how to obtain your diploma equivalency certificate for studying in Turkey. Follow our step-by-step guide to prepare your documents and complete the process.

What is the Turkish Equivalence Certificate (Denklik)?

The Equivalence Certificate, known as 'Denklik Belgesi' in Turkish, is an official document. it proves that your previous education outside Turkey is equal to the education provided by Turkish institutions. This document is mandatory for foreign students who wish to enroll in associate, undergraduate, or graduate programs at Turkish universities.

Without this certificate, your foreign diploma is not legally recognized by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) or the Ministry of National Education (MEB). It serves as a bridge between your home country's academic system and the Turkish educational standards.

Why You Need a Denklik Certificate

Turkish universities require this document during the final registration process. Even if you receive an acceptance letter from a university, you cannot officially start your studies without proving your diploma's validity. It ensures that the curriculum you studied abroad meets the minimum requirements of the Turkish education system. This process applies to high school diplomas for undergraduate applicants and university diplomas for those seeking Master's or PhD degrees.

Where to Apply for the Equivalence Certificate

You have two main options for obtaining your Denklik certificate. It is often easier to complete this process before you arrive in Turkey.

  • In Your Home Country: You can apply at the Education Attaché or Education Counselor's office within the Turkish Embassy or Consulate.
  • In Turkey: You can apply at the Provincial Directorates of National Education (İl Milli Eğitim Müdürlüğü) located in various cities across the country.

Required Documents for the Application

Preparation is key to a smooth application. You must provide original documents. Photocopies are generally not accepted unless they are notarized and accompanied by the originals. Prepare the following:

  • Original Diploma: Your high school or university diploma.
  • Transcripts: Detailed records of all your academic terms and grades.
  • Passport: A valid passport and a copy of the ID page.
  • Identity Document: Your residence permit (İkamet İzni) if you are already in Turkey.
  • Application Form: Completed via the online portal.
  • Apostille or Legalization: Documents must be verified by your country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs or have an Apostille stamp.

Step-by-Step Online Application Process

The Turkish government has digitized the process through the e-Denklik portal. Follow these steps to start your application:

  • Visit the official website at edenklik.meb.gov.tr.
  • Create an account and fill out the online application form accurately.
  • Upload clear scans of your diploma, transcripts, and passport.
  • Select your appointment location. For faster processing, it is often recommended to select City: Istanbul and District: Metropolitan.
  • Book an appointment date to submit your physical documents for verification.

Important Tips for a Successful Application

To avoid delays, ensure all your documents are translated into Turkish by a sworn translator and notarized. The Ministry of National Education will not accept documents that lack proper verification from your home country's authorities. If your country is not a member of the Apostille Convention, you must get your documents stamped by the Turkish Consulate in that country.

Always keep a digital copy of every document you submit. If you are applying for graduate studies (Master's or PhD), the process is handled by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) rather than the Ministry of National Education. Ensure you are applying to the correct authority based on your level of study.

Processing Times and Fees

The time it takes to receive your certificate varies. Generally, it takes between one week and one month depending on the volume of applications. There is usually a small administrative fee for the service, which must be paid at a designated bank before your appointment. Always check the latest fee schedule on the e-Denklik portal before your visit.
