Discover the step-by-step process for foreigners to obtain and personalize an Istanbul Card for seamless public transportation across the city.

What is the Istanbul Card (Istanbulkart)?

The Istanbul Card is your ticket to moving around the city like a local. It's a contactless smart card used for all public transportation in Istanbul. You'll need it for buses, metros, trams, and ferries. It even works for the Marmaray and funiculars. You can also use the card to pay for public toilets or buy snacks at Migros grocery stores.

Using an Istanbul Card is much cheaper than buying single-use tickets. It also lets you get discounts when you switch between different lines within two hours.

Types of Istanbul Card for Foreigners

You can choose from a few different card types. Your choice depends on how long you plan to stay and your legal status in Turkey.

1. Anonymous Card (Anonim Kart)

This is the standard red card you'll see everywhere. You don't need an ID or any registration to buy one. It's the best choice for tourists or short-term visitors. Just grab one from a vending machine or a small kiosk.

2. Personalized Card (Kişiselleştirilmiş Kart)

If you have a residence permit (Ikamet), you should personalize your card. This lets you freeze your balance if you lose the card. It also gives you access to transfer discounts that tourists can't get anymore. You can set this up easily through the Istanbulkart mobile app.

3. Student Card (Öğrenci Kartı)

Foreign students at Turkish universities can get a special discounted card. This version offers the cheapest fares in the entire city. You'll need to apply online or at a service center with your student certificate and your passport.

4. Monthly Pass (Mavi Kart)

Do you travel every single day? Then you might want a monthly subscription called Mavi Kart. You pay a set price for a specific number of rides. It's a great way to save money if you're a heavy user of the transport system.

Where to Buy an Istanbul Card

You can get an Istanbul Card at many different spots across the city:

  • Biletmatik Machines: These are the yellow and blue machines at every metro and tram station. You'll also find them at Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW).
  • Authorized Kiosks: Many small shops and newsstands sell them. Look for the blue Istanbulkart sign in the window.
  • Mobile App: You can create a digital version of the card on your phone. This lets you pay using a QR code at the turnstiles.

How to Top Up Your Balance

Bus drivers don't take cash, so you must keep your card loaded. Adding money is simple and takes just a few seconds.

  • Biletmatik Machines: Put your card on the glass reader, pick your amount, and slide in your cash. These machines don't give change, so the full amount goes onto your card.
  • Mobile App: Link your bank card to the official app. This lets you add funds while you're walking to the station.
  • Grocery Stores: You can top up at the checkout in stores like A101, BIM, or Migros. Just tell the cashier how much you want to add.

Important Update: HEPP Code Requirements

You might see old articles talking about HEPP (HES) codes. During the pandemic, everyone had to link a health code to their card. This rule ended in 2022. You don't need any health codes to buy or use public transport now.

Using the Istanbulkart Mobile App

The official app works on both iOS and Android. It's a very helpful tool for people living in the city. The app lets you do several things:

  • Check how much money is left on your card.
  • See a list of your recent trips and costs.
  • Add money using a credit or debit card.
  • Use a QR code to pay if you leave your physical card at home.
  • Link your card to your foreigner ID number (the one starting with 99).

Fare Structure and Transfers

Istanbul uses a tiered fare system for some lines. The Marmaray and Metrobüs use a "pay-as-you-go" method. You must tap your card again at a refund machine (iade makinesi) when you get off. This gives you back money for the distance you didn't travel. Standard buses and metros have a flat rate. But remember, you only get transfer discounts if you use a personalized card.

Getting your Istanbul Card is the smartest way to explore the city. It's fast, cheap, and works almost everywhere.
