Istanbul Card for Foreigners: Your Essential Guide
Discover the step-by-step process for foreigners to obtain and personalize an Istanbul Card for seamless public transportation across the city.
What is the Istanbul Card (Istanbulkart)?
The Istanbul Card is an all-in-one contactless smart card used for public transportation throughout Istanbul. It is the only payment method accepted on buses, metros, trams, ferries, funiculars, and the Marmaray. You can also use it to pay for public toilets, vending machines, and at certain grocery stores like Migros.
Using an Istanbul Card is significantly cheaper than buying single-use tokens. It also allows for discounted transfers between different lines within a two-hour window.
Types of Istanbul Cards for Foreigners
Depending on your residency status and length of stay, you can choose from several card types:
1. Anonymous Card (Anonim Kart)
This is the standard red card. It does not require any identification or registration. It is the best option for tourists and short-term visitors. You can buy it from any vending machine or authorized kiosk.
2. Personalized Card (Kişiselleştirilmiş Kart)
Foreigners with a residence permit (Ikamet) can personalize their cards. Personalization allows you to block the balance if the card is lost and enables you to benefit from transfer discounts that are no longer available to anonymous users. You can personalize your card via the Istanbulkart mobile app or the official website.
3. Student Card (Öğrenci Kartı)
Foreign students enrolled in Turkish universities or language schools are eligible for a discounted student card. This card offers the lowest fares in the city. You must apply online or at an Istanbulkart application center with your student certificate (Öğrenci Belgesi) and passport.
4. Monthly Pass (Mavi Kart)
If you commute daily, you can load a monthly subscription (Mavi Kart) onto a personalized card. This provides a set number of rides for a fixed monthly fee, which is much cheaper for heavy users.
Where to Buy an Istanbul Card
You can obtain an Istanbul Card at several locations across the city:
- Biletmatik Machines: These yellow and blue automated machines are located at every metro station, tram stop, and ferry terminal. They are also available at Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW).
- Authorized Kiosks: Look for small convenience stores or newsstands with the "Istanbulkart" logo.
- Istanbulkart Mobile App: You can create a digital card through the app and pay using QR codes at turnstiles.
How to Top Up Your Balance
Keeping your card loaded is essential, as drivers do not accept cash. You can add funds through:
- Biletmatik Machines: Insert your card, select the amount, and insert cash. Note that these machines usually do not give change; the entire amount inserted will be loaded onto the card.
- Mobile App: Link your credit or debit card to the Istanbulkart app to top up on the go.
- Grocery Stores: Chain stores like A101, BIM, and Migros allow you to top up your card at the checkout counter.
Important Update: HEPP Code Requirements
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Turkey required all users to link a HEPP (HES) code to their Istanbul Card. As of 2022, this requirement has been abolished. You no longer need a HEPP code to purchase, register, or use public transportation in Istanbul.
Using the Istanbulkart Mobile App
The official Istanbulkart app is available on iOS and Android. It is a powerful tool for foreigners living in the city. Through the app, you can:
- Check your current balance.
- See your recent trip history.
- Top up using a credit card.
- Create a digital card to pay via QR code if you forget your physical card.
- Personalize your card using your foreigner ID number (99 number).
Fare Structure and Transfers
Istanbul uses a tiered fare system. The Marmaray and Metrobüs use a "pay-as-you-go" system where you must tap your card again at a refund machine (iade makinesi) after exiting to get back the fare for the distance you did not travel. For standard buses and metros, the fare is flat. If you use a personalized card, your second and third rides within 120 minutes will be significantly cheaper.
