Military Obligations for New Turkish Citizens: A Comprehensive Guide
Discover the military service requirements for naturalized Turkish citizens, including exemption criteria, deferment options, and the paid military service process.
Understanding Turkish Military Service Law
The Turkish military service law falls under Recruitment Law No. 7179. This rule applies to every male citizen. It covers men born in Turkey. And it covers those who get citizenship through investment or marriage later in life.
If you need a closer look here, see Understanding Turkish Citizenship by Investment for Families.
You enter military age on January 1st of the year you turn 20. This duty ends when you turn 41. During these years, the state expects healthy men to serve. But some people qualify for exemptions.
Who is Required to Serve?
Every male citizen must do his duty. But rules change for those who get Turkish citizenship as adults. Your age when you became a citizen is the main factor. The law treats adults differently than children or young adults.
Exemption Rules for New Turkish Citizens
Turkey offers clear ways to skip service so you can settle in easily. There are two main paths for new citizens to get a military exemption.
1. The Age 22 Rule
This is the easiest way to get an exemption. Were you 22 or older when you officially became a citizen? If so, you're exempt. The Ministry sees your duty as finished. You don't have to join the army. You don't even have to pay a fee. Just make sure the military database shows your correct status.
2. Recognition of Prior Foreign Service
Did you become a citizen before turning 22? You might still avoid the draft if you served in your home country. Turkey accepts service from specific nations. You'll need official papers to prove you finished your duty elsewhere. Get these documents translated and notarized first.
Military Service Options and Durations
If you're under 22 and not exempt, you have options. You can choose how to finish your military service in Turkey.
Standard Military Service
Most privates serve for 6 months. If you have a university degree, you might serve 12 months as an officer. This depends on what the military needs at the time.
Paid Military Service (Bedelli Askerlik)
Many professionals choose the "Bedelli" system. You pay a set fee to the state. In return, you only do one month of basic training. The price changes every six months. Right now, in early 2025, it costs about ₺280,850.
Foreign Currency Service (Dövizle Askerlik)
This is for citizens living and working abroad. Have you lived outside Turkey for at least 1,095 days? If you have a work permit, you can apply. You pay a fee in foreign currency. Usually, you don't have to do any training at all.
Deferment for Students and Professionals
You can delay your service if you can't go right away. New citizens under 22 can often wait two years. This helps you settle your life first. And students can wait until they finish school, as long as they stay under certain age limits.
The Application Process and Required Documents
You must visit a local recruitment office (Askerlik Şubesi) to fix your status. If you're abroad, you can go to a Turkish Consulate. They'll help you with the paperwork.
If you need a closer look here, see Required Documents for the Application.
You'll typically need these documents:
- Turkish ID card (T.C. Kimlik).
- Your original passport.
- Your citizenship certificate.
- Proof of old military service if you have it.
- Diplomas to show your rank.
- Notarized Turkish translations of all foreign papers.
Following the Turkish Military Service Law
Don't ignore the Turkish military service law. If you do, you'll face fines and legal trouble. The state might label you an evader (bakaya). This causes big problems at airports or hotels during police checks. You might not even be able to renew your passport. So, it's best to clear your status early.
