Discover the essential steps and required documents to convert your foreign driver's license into a valid Turkish license for legal driving in Turkey.

Driving in Turkey with a Foreign License: The 6-Month Rule

You can start driving in Turkey with a foreign license the moment you arrive. But there's a time limit you need to know. Turkish law lets you use your original license for six months from your entry date. After that, the rules get a bit stricter.

If you stay longer than six months but less than a year, you'll need a notarized Turkish translation. You can get this from a local notary or a Turkish consulate. Once you've lived here for a full year, you must get a Turkish driver's license. If you don't, your license becomes invalid. This could lead to big fines or insurance trouble if you have an accident.

Legal Requirements for License Conversion

To get a local license, you must follow Article 41 of the Highway Traffic Law. You'll need to meet the same standards as any local driver. First, you must be old enough for your vehicle type. For a standard car, that means you are at least 18 years old.

You also need a primary school diploma at the very least. A doctor must check your health to ensure you're fit to drive. Plus, your criminal record must be clean of specific crimes. Diplomats sometimes have different rules, but they usually still need to prove they are fit to drive. So, check your status before you apply.

Eligible Countries and Class Equivalency

Turkey follows the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. If your home country signed this, the driving in Turkey with a foreign license conversion is usually easy. Turkey will give you an equivalent license class. For example, a standard car license from home becomes a Class B license here.

But what if your country isn't part of this international deal? You might have to take the full driving course and pass the exam. It's a good idea to check your country's status on the official list first. This saves you time and prevents surprises at the registration office.

Required Documents for the Application

The Nüfus office handles all these applications. You'll need to book an appointment online before you go. Bring your original license and its notarized translation. Don't forget your passport or your residence permit (İkamet İzni).

  • Medical Report: Get a "Sürücü Olur" report from a clinic or hospital.
  • Blood Type: Bring a document that shows your blood group.
  • Photos: You'll need two biometric photos with a white background.
  • Criminal Record: You can download this easily from the e-Devlet portal.
  • Education: Bring a notarized translation of your school diploma.
  • Receipts: Show proof that you paid the license and paper fees at the bank.

Step-by-Step Conversion Process

Ready to switch? First, check if your country has a reciprocal agreement with Turkey. Then, visit a doctor for your health report. Tell them it's for a license conversion. Next, get your license translated and notarized by a professional. And don't forget to pay your fees at a bank or online through the tax office.

Keep all your receipts safe. Then, book your spot on the NVI website. Go to the appointment, give your fingerprints, and hand over your files. Your new card arrives by mail via PTT within a few days. Just remember, the office might keep your old license. Now you can enjoy driving in Turkey with a foreign license or your new Turkish one without any legal worries.
