HOW TO CONVERT A FOREIGN LICENSE TO A TURKISH LICENSE?

In this blog post, we will talk about how foreign citizens can convert their driver’s license to a Turkish driver’s license. In order to be able to drive in Turkey with driver’s licenses obtained from foreign countries, it is necessary to replace the driver’s license with Turkish driver’s licenses. 

Except for the education and examination condition specified in Article 41 of Law No. 2918 for those who will obtain a driver’s license, the conditions of not being convicted, age, education and health are sought in the same way. Only for foreigners with diplomatic exemption, their written declaration that they meet the necessary conditions is taken as basis; however, the provisions of bilateral or multilateral agreements and practices are reserved.

Is A FOREIGN DRIVER’S LICENSE VALID IN TURKEY?

Turkish citizens or foreign nationals have the right to use their driver’s licenses in Turkey, as per the agreements between countries. However, foreign licenses have a valid period in Turkey. At the end of this period, it is obligatory for people who want to continue driving in Turkey to convert their foreign licenses to Turkish ones.

The licenses obtained from abroad are valid for 6 months in Turkey. From the moment of entry to Turkey, a vehicle can be driven in Turkey with a foreign license for a maximum of 6 months. Persons who want to use their foreign license after 6 months can use their foreign license for another 6 months by having the sworn translation of the driver’s license approved by foreign representative offices or notary public. It is obligatory for people who have completed 1 year or will live in Turkey permanently to convert their foreign license to a Turkish driver’s license within 1 year. If it is not turned, the use of the vehicle is prohibited.

 CONVERTING A FOREIGN DRIVER CERTIFICATE TO A TURKISH DRIVER CERTIFICATE

All driver’s license procedures were taken from the General Directorate of Security with the previous decision and transferred to the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs. You need to go to the appointment by collecting the following documents.

* Turkish translation of your driver’s license, obtained from a notary public or consulate,

* Your ID

* Becomes a driver medical report

* Document indicating your blood type

* Biometric photo

* Criminal record certificate

* Receipt that you have paid the driver’s license, valuable paper, fee and foundation share 

In addition to these, during the conversion of your foreign driver’s license to a Turkish driver’s license, the class of your driver’s license will be determined as much as the scope of the license you have obtained in the other country. In other words, if you have a car license in another country, the corresponding class B driver’s license is given to you in our country.
