Learn the essential steps and required documents for extending your work permit in Turkey before your current permit expires to ensure a seamless legal process.
Everything You Need to Know About a Work Permit Extension
You need a valid work permit to keep working legally in Turkey. Under International Labor Law No. 6735, your first permit usually lasts one year. If you want to stay at your job, apply for a work permit extension before your current one runs out. It’s a simple rule, but the timing is vital.

Don't take risks with your status. Working after your permit expires is illegal if you haven't applied for a renewal. This leads to fines or even deportation. Your employer will also face heavy penalties. So, make sure you submit your paperwork on time to stay safe.
When to Apply for a Work Permit Extension
Timing makes or breaks your application. You can only apply within 60 days of your permit's expiry date. Don't try to apply earlier than that. But you absolutely cannot apply after it expires. If you miss the deadline, you'll have to start a brand-new application. That process is much harder and follows stricter rules.
How Long Your Extension Lasts
How long is the new permit? It depends on your employer. If you stay at the same job, the Ministry usually gives you two years for your first extension. Later, you can get up to three years at a time. But if you switch companies, it counts as a new application. In that case, you'll likely get just one year again.
