There are several ways to become a Turkish citizen. Some take a few months, others take years. Here's how each route works in 2026, and how to pick the right one.

All routes fall into two groups. The fast track is investment. The others are time-based: you build up years of residence, work, or marriage first.

Citizenship by investment is the route most of our clients take. The most popular option is real estate worth at least $400,000. Bank deposits, government bonds, investment funds or fixed capital start at $500,000. Or you can create jobs for 50 people. Investments must be held for 3 years.

Why is it so popular? You don't have to live in Turkey, there's no language test, and your spouse and children under 18 apply with you.

Once your documents are ready, many files are completed in 3–6 months, though official queues can change that.

The process: buy the property, get the official valuation, register the title deed with a 3-year no-sale note, receive your certificate of conformity and residence permit, then apply. We cover each step in our 8-step video.

The time-based routes start with residence. After 5 years of uninterrupted legal residence, you can apply, if you can show you intend to settle, speak basic Turkish, have an income, a clean record, and good health. Owning property alone does not make you a citizen.

Two things to plan for. Try to keep your time abroad under 6 months. Applications with up to 12 months abroad are still possible. And once you apply, the process typically takes one to 3 years.

Professionals follow a similar path: 5 years of working legally in Turkey, with tax and social security records to prove it.

If you're married to a Turkish citizen, you can apply after 3 years of marriage. You must live together, and the authorities check that the marriage is genuine.

Whatever the route, every foreign document needs an apostille, a sworn Turkish translation and a notary approval. Our checklist video lists them all.

And good news: Turkey allows dual citizenship. Just check that your home country does too.
