Mandatory Health Insurance for Turkish Residence Permits

If you plan to live in Turkey, you'll need valid health insurance to get your Turkish Residence Permit (ikamet). It's a legal rule from the Presidency of Migration Management. Prices went up in 2024. This happened because government taxes and permit fees rose. New prices match today's medical costs and the minimum medical coverage the law demands.

What Does Your Health Insurance Cover?

Standard policies for foreigners meet basic legal rules. They cover both hospital stays and doctor visits. You'll need to use the insurance company's network of hospitals to get the best rates. This helps keep your out-of-pocket costs low.

Inpatient Treatment Coverage

This covers surgeries, hospital rooms, and intensive care. Most 2024 policies pay 100% of these costs at private hospitals in their network. If you go elsewhere, the company might only pay a small part. So, always check the hospital list first.

Outpatient Treatment Coverage

Outpatient care covers check-ups, tests, and lab work. Most plans have a yearly limit between 5,000 TRY and 10,000 TRY. Usually, the insurance pays 60% to 80% of the bill. You'll pay the rest yourself.

Factors Influencing Insurance Costs in 2024

A few things change what you'll pay. Knowing these helps you plan your budget for your application. Prices aren't the same for everyone.

  • Age: This matters most. Older people are a higher risk for insurers.
  • Policy Length: Buying a 2-year plan is often cheaper than renewing every year.
  • Hospital Network: Plans with more private hospitals cost more but are easier to use.
  • Inflation: Higher medical costs in Turkey push premium prices up.

How to Pick the Right Policy for your Turkish Residence Permit

Make sure your policy has the exact legal wording about "minimum coverage limits." If it doesn't mention circular no. 9, the Migration Office will say no. It's a simple mistake that can ruin your Turkish Residence Permit application. And don't forget to check if the company has good hospitals in your city.
