Learn everything you need to know about Turkish work permits, including application processes, permit extensions, and how they relate to your residence status.

Understanding the Turkish Work Permit System

Getting a Turkish work permit is the most important step for your career in Turkey. Under Law No. 6458, this permit also acts as your residence permit. This means you don't need a separate card while your permit is active. It keeps things simple for you.

How Your Turkish Work Permit Affects Your Residency

Does a Work Permit Replace a Residence Permit?

Yes, they are the same thing legally. The Ministry of Labor issues these permits to cover both your job and your stay. Your legal stay lasts as long as your permit is valid. But if it expires, you must get a new permit or leave the country.

Switching to a Residence Permit Before Your Job Ends

Maybe your job is ending, but you want to live in Turkey. You can apply for a residence permit before your current one runs out. Make sure to apply within the last 60 days of your work permit. This prevents any gaps in your legal status.

What Happens if a Work Permit is Canceled?

If your permit gets canceled, you have 10 days to apply for a new one. This is your legal grace period. And if you had a residence permit before the work permit, it might still be valid. Check the original expiry date on that card to be sure.

Who Can Get a Turkish Work Permit Locally?

You can apply for a permit while you are inside Turkey. Usually, you need a residence permit with at least six months left on it. But tourist permits often don't count for this. If you don't have the right permit, your employer must apply through a consulate in your home country.

Turkish Work Permit Rules for Students

Associate and Undergraduate Students

Foreign students in undergraduate programs can work here too. But you have to wait until you finish your first year of study. The Ministry sets specific rules for how many hours you can work each week.

Graduate and Doctoral Students

Master’s and PhD students have it easier. You can apply for a permit at any time during your studies. While you have it, you don't need a student residence permit. But if the work ends, you must get a student permit right away to stay in school.

Exceptions for the Turkish Work Permit

Temporary Protection and Refugee Status

People under temporary protection can apply for a permit after six months. If you are a recognized refugee, your ID card is your work permit. You can start working for yourself or a boss immediately. Just remember that some jobs, like law or medicine, have extra rules.

Professional Athletes and Coaches

Athletes and coaches don't always need a standard permit. If the Turkish Football Federation approves your contract, that is enough. Your contract acts as your legal right to stay and work until the agreement ends.

Mandatory Registration After Getting a Turkish Work Permit

Once you have your Turkish work permit, you aren't done yet. You must register your address within 20 working days of arriving. Go to the local migration office to do this. It’s a legal requirement under Article 27 of the law.
