Foreigners can retire in Turkey by meeting the same social security conditions as Turkish citizens. Learn the age and work permit requirements for your pension.

Understanding Retirement for Foreigners in Turkey

Do you work in Turkey with a valid work permit? If so, you have the same social security rights as any Turkish citizen. Under Law No. 5510, the state integrates you into the Social Security Institution (SGK). This means your legal work helps you build a path toward retirement for foreigners in Turkey by paying monthly premiums.

Key Requirements for Retirement

Your retirement date depends on when you first paid into the system. If you started your insurance coverage after April 30, 2008, specific age rules apply to you:

  • Women: 58 years of age.
  • Men: 60 years of age.

But age isn't the only factor. You also need to complete enough premium payment days. For people in the private sector (4A), you usually need 7,200 days. If you're self-employed (4B) or a public worker (4C), the goal is 9,000 days.

The Role of International Social Security Agreements

Turkey has deals with many countries like Canada, South Korea, and most of Europe. These agreements are a huge help for foreign workers. They let you combine your working years from home with your time in Turkey to meet the minimum day count. Experts call this "totalization." If your country lacks an agreement, you'll need to meet all premium rules within the Turkish system alone.

Disability Retirement for Foreign Nationals

You can also get a pension if you become disabled. If you lose at least 60% of your work capacity, you might qualify for help. This applies to accidents at work or long-term illnesses. You'll generally need 10 years of insurance and 1,800 paid days. An SGK-authorized hospital must provide a medical report to prove your status before you can get these benefits.

Unemployment Benefits for Foreign Workers

Losing a job is hard, but you might have a safety net. You can claim unemployment pay if you lose your job through no fault of your own. To get this, you must have 600 days of premiums in the last three years. Also, you need to work the last 120 days before your contract ends. These funds help you while you look for a new job or change your residency status.

How to Apply for Retirement

Ready to retire? You must send a formal request to the SGK office once you meet the age and day rules. Bring your passport, work permit records, and insurance history. If you're using years from abroad, get official papers from your home country's social security office. You'll need to translate and notarize these documents for the Turkish authorities to accept them.

Staying in Turkey After You Retire

Remember that your work permit ends when your job does. To stay here, you'll need to get a new residence permit. Many retirees choose a short-term permit for tourism or property owners. Your new Turkish pension proves you have the money to live here. This makes the process for retirement for foreigners in Turkey much smoother for your future.
