If you're looking for a short termresidence permit for tourism, the rules have changed recently. Many foreigners got stuck in Turkey during the pandemic. Their visas expired, and they couldn't access health or school services. Because of this, the government paused certain restrictions on September 8, 2020. This allows people to fix their legal status and stay legally.

The following rules now apply:

  1. Local offices will review new tourism applications for those rejected after January 1, 2020. These will follow general legal rules.
  2. If you have a pending application, the governorate will finish it soon. You don't need to apply again for the same reason.
  3. Did your visa expire after January 1, 2020? If you haven't applied yet, the office will check your file under general rules.
  4. If you overstayed and apply now, you must pay double the normal fee. This follows the Fees Law No. 492. You'll pay the calculated amount based on your application date.

The General Directorate of Migration Management shared new details about tourism permits. We've seen that many people still have questions about how this works.

Here is what you need to know:

1. Did you overstay a visa or permit before January 1, 2020?

Answer: No. Foreigners who violated rules before this date can't apply under this specific scope. The office will likely reject your application if you try.

2. Who can use these new rules?

Answer: Foreigners who overstayed after January 1, 2020. If you apply now, the ministry will review your case under general provisions.

3. Can I re-apply if I was rejected?

Answer: Yes. If you were rejected or didn't apply after the cutoff date, you can try again. Your new residence permit application will be reviewed normally.

4. How much will I pay in fees and penalties?

Answer: If you overstayed after January 1, 2020, you'll pay twice the normal residence fee. Some people from fee-free countries must also pay a single-entry visa fee.

5. Can I check my status before going to the office?

Answer: Yes. To keep people safe during the pandemic, the Istanbul office moved services online. You can email istanbul.duzenli@goc.gov.tr with your questions.

Use that email address to find out about:

  • The current status of your application.
  • Your PTT barcode number for tracking.
  • How to get your official application document.

Getting your short term residence permit is easier when you have the right facts. Make sure to pay your fees on time to avoid more trouble.
