Rules for a Residence Permit in Turkey

Turkey uses Law No. 6458 to manage how foreign guests stay in the country legally. If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, you must get a residence permit in Turkey. The short-term tourist permit is the most popular choice. It lets you live here, but it doesn't allow you to work.

Core Documents for Your Application

Prepare a physical folder for your meeting at the Migration Office. Small mistakes often lead to a quick rejection. So, make sure every paper is current and correct.

1. Residence Permit Application Form

Fill out the form on the official e-Ikamet site. Pick your date and the system will give you a PDF. Print it out and sign the signature box. This paper is your proof of registration in the system.

2. Valid Passport and Photocopies

Your passport must stay valid for 60 days past your permit's end date. For example, if you want a one-year stay, your passport needs at least 14 months of validity. Don't forget color copies of your ID page and your last entry stamp.

3. Biometric Photographs

Get four biometric photos taken within the last six months. They need a plain white background. You'll upload a digital version for the form, but the officer needs physical copies for the file.

Health Insurance and Financial Proof

The government wants to see that you can pay your own way. You shouldn't need help from the Turkish state for money or healthcare.

Private Health Insurance

If you're between 18 and 65, you must buy private health insurance. It needs to cover the whole time you're staying. Make sure the policy mentions it's for a residence permit. Children and seniors over 65 don't need this, but it's still a good idea to have it.

Proof of Financial Sufficiency

Officers might ask for a Turkish bank statement to see your funds. A good rule is to have enough to match the monthly minimum wage for your whole stay. Sometimes a simple declaration works. But it's safer to have the bank papers ready.

Proving Your Address in Turkey

You need a legal place to live where the government can reach you. The authorities check this part very closely.

Notarized Rental Agreements

Renting a home? You'll need a notarized contract. Your landlord must go to the notary with you and bring their original ID and title deed. Some neighborhoods in big cities like Istanbul are now closed to new residents. Check this before you sign a lease.

Address Registration (UAVT)

Sometimes you need a document from the National Address Database. You can get this from the local registry office. You can also find it on the e-Devlet portal if you're renewing a permit.

Administrative Fees and Payments

There are two main costs. You pay for the card and a separate residence tax. The tax amount changes based on your passport. Pay these fees at tax offices or Ziraat Bank. You can also use a Turkish credit card on the e-Ikamet portal. Keep your original receipts.

Common Reasons for Application Rejection

Many people get rejected for living in a "closed" district. Other reasons include bad insurance or missing your appointment. If they say no, you usually have 10 days to leave the country. And you can't apply for the same permit for another six months.

Getting a residence permit in Turkey requires careful planning. But once you have it, you can enjoy your stay without worry. Just follow the rules and keep your documents ready.
