Turkish Military Service for New Citizens: 2026 Rules and Exemptions

Updated for August 2026: Military-service status for a person who later acquires Turkish citizenship depends mainly on age in the year citizenship was acquired, previous military service and the person's education and registration records. The controlling rule is Article 43 of Recruitment Law No. 7179.

Who Is Subject to Turkish Military Service?

Military service rules generally apply to male Turkish citizens. A naturalized citizen is processed according to the age and education status recorded when citizenship was acquired, as if entering military age with the relevant cohort. The rules below apply to people who acquired citizenship later; citizenship obtained by descent can be treated differently.

The Age-22 Rule for Naturalized Citizens

According to the Ministry of National Defence, people who were admitted to Turkish citizenship in the year they were 22 or older are regarded as having completed military service. The calculation is based on the year of naturalization without considering the month and day of birth. The status should still be checked in the military system after citizenship registration.

A person naturalized before the relevant age threshold is not automatically exempt merely because the citizenship route was investment, marriage or general naturalization.

Previous Military Service in Another Country

Naturalized citizens who can document that they completed—or were officially regarded as having completed—military service in their former country may be regarded as having completed the obligation in Turkey. The recruitment office decides whether the evidence satisfies the rule. Foreign documents may require legalization, certified Turkish translation and supporting service records.

Two-Year Deferment After Naturalization

For a naturalized citizen who remains liable, military service may be deferred on request for two years from the date citizenship was acquired. When the deferment ends, registration and medical-examination procedures are carried out with the applicable cohort. This is a deferment, not an exemption.

Service Options If You Are Still Liable

Standard Service

The assigned status and duration depend on education, classification and current recruitment rules. Confirm the current classification through e-Devlet or the nearest recruitment office rather than relying on an older article.

Paid Military Service (Bedelli Askerlik)

Eligible applicants may use the paid-service system after completing the required application, payment and basic-training steps. The amount changes when the civil-servant salary coefficient is updated. For 1 July–31 December 2026, the Ministry announced a fee of ₺472,653.60; an additional amount can apply to people recorded as draft evaders or deserters. Always verify the amount on the payment date.

Foreign-Currency Military Service

Citizens living abroad may qualify for foreign-currency military service if they meet the current overseas residence or employment conditions and complete the prescribed process. Eligibility and required evidence should be confirmed with the relevant Turkish consulate.

Students and Other Deferments

Education can support deferment within statutory age limits. The limit and documents depend on the education level, whether the institution is recognized and the person's existing military status. Enrollment alone does not erase an existing draft-evasion record.

How to Confirm Your Status

1. Check the “Askerliğim” service on e-Devlet after citizenship registration.
2. If the status is missing or incorrect, contact a military recruitment office or a Turkish consulate.
3. Bring the Turkish ID card, citizenship decision or registration information, passports, education documents and any proof of foreign military service.
4. Complete certified translation or legalization when requested.
5. Obtain written confirmation before making travel, work or payment decisions.

Why Early Verification Matters

An incorrect or unresolved record can lead to fines and complications with official procedures. Do not assume that investment citizenship, dual nationality or residence abroad automatically creates an exemption. Confirm the record soon after receiving Turkish citizenship.
