Turkey-Azerbaijan Travel: New Identity Card Entry-Exit Protocol
Citizens of Turkey and Azerbaijan can travel between the two nations using only national identity cards. Learn about the required entry-exit form procedures here.
Passport-Free Travel Between Turkey and Azerbaijan
You can now enjoy passport-free travel between Turkey and Azerbaijan using just your national identity card. This rule started on April 1, 2021. It follows the "Two States, One Nation" idea. By removing the need for passports for short trips, it helps tourists and business people move faster. It's a great way to visit family too.
Requirements for Using Your ID Card
The process is easy, but you must follow certain rules. Not every ID works at the border. You need to make sure your document meets the current standards.
New Biometric IDs Only
You must have a new-generation chip-enabled (biometric) ID card. Old laminated cards without chips won't work. If yours is old, use a valid passport or get a new ID before you leave. Don't wait until the last minute to check this.
Check the Expiry Date
Your ID must be valid for your whole stay. We suggest having at least six months left on it from the day you arrive. This helps you avoid any trouble with border officers.
Passport-Free Travel Between Turkey and Azerbaijan: The Entry-Exit Form
When you use an ID card, officers won't stamp the card itself. Instead, they use a paper called the "Entry-Exit Form" (Giriş-Çıkış Formu). This is a simple paper printed in two languages.
How to Use the Form
1. Get the form: You'll get this paper at the passport desk before you leave or when you arrive.
2. Get it stamped: The officer stamps the form to show your entry date.
3. Keep it safe: Carry this form with you everywhere. It's your only legal proof of entry.
4. Show it when leaving: Give the stamped form back when you leave the country. If you lose it, you might pay a fine or face delays.
Stay Duration and Visa Rules
You can stay for 90 days within any 180-day period. This applies to both Turkish and Azerbaijani citizens. So, you can visit often as long as you don't stay too long.
But don't use your ID if you plan to work or study. For stays over 90 days, you need a passport to get a visa or residence permit. This ID rule is only for short visits and tourism.
Travel Through Third Countries
This ID rule only works for direct trips between the two nations. If you go through a third country like Georgia or Russia, bring your passport. Other countries don't recognize this deal. They will ask for a passport to let you in or pass through their borders.
Practical Tips for Your Trip
- Check your photo: Make sure your ID photo is clear and looks like you.
- Bring a pen: You might need to fill out the form quickly at the airport.
- Take a photo: Snap a picture of your stamped form as a backup. But remember, you still need the paper version to leave.
- Land borders: You can use your ID at land crossings like the Dilucu border.
This system makes passport-free travel between Turkey and Azerbaijan much cheaper and faster. It builds a stronger bond between both nations. And it helps more people visit for business or fun without extra paperwork.
