International students in Turkey can work legally by obtaining a work permit. Learn about the 24-hour weekly limit and application requirements for students.
Legal Framework for Student Work Permits in Turkey
International students in Turkey can work legally if they follow the rules. The International Labor Law No. 6735 sets these rules. You must get a student work permit before you start any job. This applies to both part-time and full-time roles. And your right to work depends on your degree level and how long you've lived here.
Rules for a Student Work Permit in Associate and Undergraduate Programs
Students in two-year or four-year programs have specific limits. These rules help you focus on your studies first. So, don't expect to work right away.
The One-Year Waiting Rule
You can't apply for a permit during your first year of school. You must finish two semesters of study first. After that, you are ready to enter the Turkish labor market.
Weekly Working Hour Limits
Once your first year ends, you can work up to 24 hours each week. The Ministry of Labor checks this limit strictly. They want to make sure you have enough time for your classes.
Work Rules for Graduate and PhD Students
Are you studying for a Master’s or a PhD? Then you have more freedom. You don't need to wait a year to apply. You can get your student work permit as soon as you have a student residence permit. But you should still check if your job fits your residency status.
What You Need to Apply
To get a permit, you must meet a few basic rules:
- Valid Residence Permit: You need a current student residence permit. You can't apply with just a visa.
- Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
- Employer Sponsor: A company must hire you first. They will submit the application for you on the e-Government site.
Internships and Training
Internships are common in Turkey. But the rules change based on the type of internship you do:
- Mandatory Internships: If your school requires it to graduate, you don't need a separate permit. These make up part of your degree.
- Optional Internships: Do you want extra experience? If it's not required, you must get a work permit. In this case, your boss must pay your insurance like a normal worker.
Jobs You Cannot Do
Even with a permit, some jobs are for Turkish citizens only. You cannot work as a:
- Dentist, Nurse, or Pharmacist.
- Vet.
- Lawyer or Legal Advisor.
- Notary.
- Security guard in private or public places.
How to Get Your Permit
The process is mostly online. Your employer sends the documents to the Ministry of Labor. If they approve it, your student work permit also acts as your residence permit. But keep in mind that if you quit school, the permit ends too. So, always keep your student status active to stay legal.
