The Importance of YÖK Recognition and Equivalency

To study in Turkey, your previous university must be recognized by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK). There are two types of documents you might need:

  • Recognition Certificate (Okul Tanıma Belgesi): This confirms that YÖK recognizes your university as an accredited institution.
  • Equivalency Certificate (Denklik Belgesi): This confirms that your specific degree is equal to a Turkish degree. This is usually required for professional fields like medicine or law.

You can apply for these documents through YÖK or seek assistance from authorized educational consultancy firms.

Required Documents for Application

To complete your registration, you will generally need the following documents:

  • Passport: A valid copy with a notarized Turkish translation.
  • Undergraduate Diploma: The original diploma and its notarized Turkish translation.
  • Transcript of Records: A detailed list of courses and grades from your bachelor's degree, translated into Turkish.
  • Reference Letters: Usually two letters from former professors or employers.
  • Statement of Purpose: A letter explaining why you want to study the specific program.
  • Language Proficiency Certificate: TOEFL or IELTS for English programs, or a TÖMER certificate for Turkish programs.
  • Diploma Supplement: Required specifically for graduates from European Union member states.

Language Requirements

Turkey offers programs in both Turkish and English. If you choose a Turkish program, you must demonstrate a C1 level of proficiency through a TÖMER exam. If you choose an English program, you must provide a valid score from an internationally recognized exam. Many universities offer a one-year language preparatory school if your language level is not yet sufficient.

Turkey is much more affordable than most European countries. Tuition fees for international students at state universities are very low, while private universities offer competitive rates and various scholarship opportunities.
