Is it Possible to Bring a Car from Abroad to Turkey?
Learn the essential rules and documents required to bring a foreign-plated car into Turkey for up to 24 months. Discover if you qualify for temporary importation.
Understanding the Temporary Entry Regime for Foreign Vehicles
Bringing a car from abroad to Turkey is a common practice for expats, retirees, and Turkish citizens living overseas. These vehicles are classified as vehicles with foreign license plates. Under current Turkish customs regulations, these cars can stay in the country for a specific duration without paying import taxes, provided the owner meets certain criteria.
The maximum period a foreign-plated vehicle can remain in Turkey is 24 months (730 days). This rule applies to both Turkish citizens residing abroad and foreign nationals. Once this period ends, the vehicle must be taken out of the country. Failure to do so results in heavy fines and potential seizure of the vehicle.
The 185-Day Residence Requirement
The most critical condition for bringing a car to Turkey is the 185-day rule. To qualify, the vehicle owner must have resided outside of Turkey for at least 185 days within the last 12 months from the date of entry. This period does not have to be continuous, but the total time spent abroad must exceed 185 days.
Customs officials check entry and exit records via your passport and the e-Devlet system. If you have spent more than 180 days inside Turkey in the previous year, you cannot bring your foreign vehicle into the country. This rule ensures that only genuine residents of foreign countries benefit from the temporary entry regime.
Essential Documents for Entry
When you arrive at the Turkish border, you must present specific documents to the customs authorities. Ensure all paperwork is valid and up to date to avoid delays.
- Ownership Certificate: The vehicle registration document (logbook) proving the car is registered in your name in your country of residence.
- Driver’s License: A valid license from your country of residence.
- Insurance: A Green Card insurance policy valid in Turkey or a Turkish Compulsory Traffic Insurance policy purchased at the border.
- Passport: Your valid passport or ID card (for eligible citizens).
- Retirement Document: If you are retired, a translated and notarized document proving your retirement status may grant you exemptions from certain residence checks.
Who Is Allowed to Drive the Vehicle?
Turkish law is strict about who can get behind the wheel of a foreign-plated car. The vehicle is registered to the passport of the person who brought it into the country. Generally, only the owner and their immediate family (spouse, parents, or children) can drive the car, provided they also reside abroad.
Third parties or friends cannot drive the vehicle unless the owner is physically present in the car. If an unauthorized person is caught driving the vehicle, the owner faces significant financial penalties, and the car may be towed to a customs warehouse.
Leaving Turkey Without Your Vehicle
If you need to travel abroad by plane or other means while your foreign car remains in Turkey, you must notify the nearest customs office. You are required to sign a commitment letter stating that no one else will use the vehicle while you are away. Alternatively, you can park the vehicle in a customs-supervised parking lot. Leaving the country without notifying customs is a violation of the law and leads to fines.
Tax-Free (Blue Plate) Vehicles for Residents
The 24-month tourist entry is different from the "Tax-Free" or "Blue Plate" (MA/MZ) system. Tax-free cars are available to foreigners who have a work permit or are studying in Turkey. This status allows the vehicle to stay for the duration of the work or residence permit. Eligible groups include:
- Foreigners with a valid Turkish work permit.
- Foreign students enrolled in a recognized Turkish university.
- Foreign lecturers and experts working under specific programs.
- Retired foreigners residing in Turkey.
- Foreign press members with official credentials.
What Happens When the 24-Month Period Ends?
Once the 730-day limit is reached, the vehicle must exit Turkey. To bring the same vehicle back, or to bring a different foreign vehicle, the owner must again fulfill the 185-day residence requirement outside of Turkey. There are no extensions for tourist entries. If you exceed the stay limit even by one day, customs will impose a fine that increases based on the duration of the overstay.
